History of John F. Kennedy International Airport
Originally named New York International Airport, the construction of John F. Kennedy Airport began in 1942 in Queens, New York City. Being built on the Idlewild Golf course, it was commonly known as Idlewild Airport. In 1947, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey started operating the airport. On July 9, 1948, the airport began its commercial flight operations. On December 24, 1963, the New York International Airport was renamed John F. Kennedy International Airport in tribute to the assassination of the nation’s 35th president. Since then, JFK Airport has made history with its operations and has become one of the largest airports in the U.S., for both passenger and cargo transportation.
